"One day my granddad tried to have a conversation with me, which he didn’t do often because he found it so difficult. He got halfway through and then forgot what he was trying to say. I was very uncomfortable standing there seeing him so angry at himself because he couldn’t think of the words but I didn’t know what to say. Now that I have more knowledge on dementia and I am older, I realise that I should have just said it was okay and we could talk about it another time and not to worry because reassurance is important. "
Think of happy things to talk about.
Talk to them when you can before it gets worse.
Ask about their memories from growing up.
Treat them the same and talk to them like a human.
Be patient and keep repeating things.
Just talk to them and let them know you are there for them.
